Valuing Our Past, Breeding for the Future |
|
As this, our second full year as alpaca farmers draws to a close we have seen our herd grow to 15 delightful suri alpacas — with 5 being born on our farm this year. What a blessing this experience has been. While we knew we would love raising alpacas long before we got started, we have also experienced an added benefit of being in the business. Friendships! We have met some really wonderful people along the way. From people who are investigating alpacas for the first time to people that have been in the business for years and every amount of experience in between. I suppose some alpaca farmers are content with just raising their alpacas and enjoying the fruits of their labors, but we see so much more. We love helping newcomers get started in the industry by sharing our (somewhat limited) experiences with them. We love sharing Heritage Farm with visitors and showing them the beauty and talking about the heritage of the farm we have been so deeply blessed with. We love going to shows, seminars and events; not only for the activities that are planned, but for the unplanned, fun and often rewarding times spent with friends and acquaintances. We’re convinced that life is about investing in people. Our alpacas have provided us the means to do just that! Tim and Beth |

Husbandry Hint Hypothermia—Are You Ready for Winter? |
|
This edition’s Husbandry Hint is a reprint of a great article from well know camelid expert and veterinarian Dr. David Anderson. It deals with making the best possible preparations for making sure our alpacas are well managed this winter. It also provide valuable treatment advice in case our alpacas are suffering from hypothermia. To check it out, click here. Also Included is information adapted from an article by Brad Sprouse on managing suri alpacas in cold weather. Brad has successfully been raising suri alpacas in northern Michigan for over ten years and his common sense approach provides practical advice any suri breeder can adapt to their operation. See the sidebar to read these great tips. |

Take a look at our farm logo at the top of the page. We chose a rendition of a log cabin to convey our identity. But it is not just any cabin. The Lovelace Cabin at Heritage Farm represents a valued part of our heritage. It reminds us every day of our agricultural roots, solid values and the importance of faith and family. Here’s the story: In 1987, Beth’s parents, Bob and Nelda Lovelace owned ... |

The last cria of the season was born October 24 as we were coming back from the Northern Illinois show. HFS Minute Man is what we are calling this fawn boy. He stands as tall and proud as his sire, Maverick from Sweetbriar Suri Alpaca Farm. |
