Valuing Our Past, Breeding for the Future |

Fall is one of our favorite seasons. The long hot and hazy summer is fading away, being replaced by bright sunny days and cool crisp nights. The alpacas seen to enjoy this time of year as well. Their energy levels are higher and they are spending more time outside taking in the fresh autumn air and romping around the pastures. The downside of transitioning from summer to fall for us caretakers is the shortening of days! Working our day jobs force us to get up well before dawn to do morning chores. And by the time we get home at night, the last hint of dusk has faded away. So, during the week, we get to work with our alpacas only by the lights of the barn. I guess this makes us appreciate the weekends even more. For us, weekends are a time where we celebrate our faith and relax with family, friends and alpacas. And at this time of year our weekends are where we can enjoy the ever changing colors of fall and daylight! Tim and Beth |

Husbandry Hints — Vaccinations and Worming |
|
When you start visiting alpaca farms and shows, you'll find that people experienced in raising livestock often say alpacas are among the easiest and most worry-free animals to care for. Alpacas tend to stay very healthy, and have few problems with pregnancy and birthing. Still, Alpacas require regular vaccinations and worming to maintain their wellbeing. As with all livestock, the vaccination schedules and worming treatments depend on where you live. Each part of the country has its own unique parasite problems and prevalence of disease. Here at Heritage Farm, we adhere to a 3 month worming rotation with SQ Ivomectin and Dectomax and a regimen of oral Panacur in the spring and fall. We also manage parasite problems by regularly rotating our alpacas off pastures. This period without animals allows any parasites in the pasture to die off. Regular vaccinations include CDT (Clostridium, Diphtheria and Tetanus) and an annual rabies vaccine. Be sure to consult with your vet to develop a program that’s right for your area. |

We are please to announce that our ribbon winning herd sire, SBS Argonaut is ready to add valuable genetics to your breeding program. Argo is an outstanding progeny of Accoyo Crown Royale. This young, 3/4 Accoyo male has great lock, density and conformation and his luster sets him at the top. Argo won the very large white juvenile male class at OABA at 7 1/2 months of age! He also won 1st place at the 2004 Futurity and the North American. His fleece had the top score in luster in his class at the 2004 OABA Fleece Show!
