40 Purdue Vet Students and Alpaca Owners Learn Alpaca Birthing Mangement Skills

Saturday Feb. 20, 2010-
The Indiana Alpaca Association  welcomed 40 attendees to an informative seminar and hands-on lab given by Dr. Cheryl DeWitt of Camelid Veterinary Services in Findlay Ohio.

Dr. DeWitt helped prepare attendess for the upcoming breeding/birthing season by increasing their confidence in dealing with emergency situations that could arise. 20 Purdue University Vet School students also gained valuable experience that will help them in their future practice.  The morning was spent in lecture covering the following topics:
  • Reproductive cycle in the female
  • Behavioral Testing - when is the optimum time to breed?
  • Pregnancy Testing - Progesterone or Ultrasound, or both?
  • How a Dam prepares for Birth
  • Feeding during Pregnancy
  • When to Vaccinate, Worm the Dam
  • Preparing for Delivery
  • Three Stages of Labor
  • Supplies to have on hand
  • Reproductive Emergencies
  • Care of the Newborn Cria
  • Premature Crias
  • Vaccinations for Crias
  • Infertility Issues in Female alpacas
  • Infertility Issues in Male alpacas
After lunch came the fun part.  The afternoon session was the hands-on portion of the clinic where students learned:
  • How to insert trachea and stomach tubes
  • How to determine if a female alpaca is in trouble
  • How much time to you have to get her to the vet?
  • And, using donated dead crias, they practiced manipulating a mis-positioned cria in a simulated uterus
At the end of the day, many attendees commented that this was the most valuable training that they have received for their alpaca operation.  They felt much more confident that they would be able to assess a difficult birth and know what to do to assure a favorable outcome.
